The Awakening
Meet the Artist
Mercedes
Rodriguez
Mercedes Rodriguez is in her senior year at UIW as an English major with a minor in creative writing. She is honored that her work has been chosen for this year’s issue and is also happy that someone other than her mom liked her photos.
1. What was your inspiration for this piece?
I’m currently taking a photography class at UIW and these images were shot for two different assignments. I wanted to create an eerie portrait and also use some of the techniques we had learned in class which is how I ended up with my final photo. I also had a lot of fun in the studio playing with props so adding googly eyes to the drinking glasses was my nod towards childhood but with a twist.
2. What is your creative process? (How do you go about creating?)
I do start off with an idea but I don’t let it hold me down too much, especially in photography where you can really do whatever you want since it’s your photo. I like to play around with props mostly.
3. What are some influences on your artistic process?
Honestly, I spend a good amount of time on Pinterest and I feel like that’s where I get a lot of ideas and inspiration for subjects of my photos. I’m new to photography so seeing what has already been done before reassures me that I can make my ideas come to life.
4. Is there anything more you’d like our readers/viewers to know about you or your work?
I like to dip my toes here and there into different aesthetics so usually, my photos never have just one theme and I think that’s very clear when you look at my two submissions side by side.
