Oocyte #3
After spending years avoiding the subject of my mother and I’s turbulent relationship, I surrendered myself to it, dedicating vast amounts of time to explore memories of physical and emotional abuse, as well as residual anger and resentment. Undertaking this project allowed me to embody her as a child, herself a victim of worse treatment than I ever was. Extreme abuse of women in my family spans generations and I am incredibly grateful to have the resources to explore cyclical patterns, if acutely aware that I have likely received more closure or solace than they ever did. Oocytes are developing egg cells produced by female fetuses. At birth, they number about 2 million. By the time she reaches puberty, that number has dwindled to around 300,000. Each egg has been present in the woman’s body since 5 months gestation and the DNA of her child is present in the bloodstream multiple decades after birth. There is scientific evidence to suggest that any deeply traumatic or stressful events the mother endures will affect her offspring’s behavior and disposition. This phenomenon is likely a contributing factor to the idea of Mother’s Intuition across many cultures. We all become our mothers because we were once a part of her.
