Interview with the Artist

1. What was the main idea, theme, or story behind this piece?

I wanted to create a pair of artworks that hold contrasting meaning. In particular, this piece was made to show the darker side of the mind. It is a visual of what it feels like to be trapped in our own nightmares. They are restricting and controlling making it hard to live our everyday lives, but the face is still "pretty" putting on a smile, so the world does not know what that person truly feels.

2. What is your creative process? (How do you go about creating?)

I usually work in black and white so it's not a surprise I did the same for "Haunted." I cover the entire page in charcoal and erase the highlights. Then, I add more shadows on top of that when needed.

3. Who or what has influenced you the most as an artist?

Caravaggio has definitely been a huge influence on me as an artist. His sharp contrast between light and dark is so fascinating to me. I am not that experienced in painting like he was, but his approach has encouraged me in charcoal art.

4. What is the significance of the title you chose?

When I am going through a difficult time, my mind is always racing as if I am thinking about the next 10 steps when I haven't even completed the first. It feels like every voice in my head wants me to fail while chains are holding me down convincing me I'm not good enough. It's overwhelming and consuming — a "haunting" feeling.

5. Is there anything more you’d like our readers/viewers to know about you or your work?

If you would like to see the piece this was as paired with it is posted on my Instagram. It's called "Free".
