A stillness in your soul that slowly takes over.
A pond, unbothered with its stillness, no ripples to be seen.
Surrounded by a dark sky, no human would be able to make out anything with their vision.
No voices or sounds come through, it never makes it past the stillness of your soul.
Monochromatic colors of black and white only fill this space.
It slowly poisons you, allures you into thinking it’s good.
It takes you away from any colorful aspect of your life. The vibrancy, the potent gleams
and glams of life that once made you happy.
Now you’re left with nothing but this stillness in you.
Too afraid to disrupt the stillness, all you do is appease it, feed it, until it fully takes over.

Interview with the Author

1. What pieces inspired you to start writing poetry?

There is not really a specific piece of poetry that inspired me to write poetry. I think it was last semester in a Beginner's Creative Writing Class at my local community college that really got me interested and hooked into the world that is poetry. Being able to study the various elements, the depth of poetry intrigued me to attempt writing my own poetry.

2. What theme do you find yourself constantly writing about in your works?

I constantly write up on themes of the human nature. I believe that the shared experiences and emotions, universal to all of us is such an interesting topic. In addition to that, I think it's necessary- to feel that human connection from one another, is important in my opinion, especially right now with the chaotic nature of everything.

3. What do you think are important elements in thought provoking poems?

I'm not too sure myself. I find myself learning and changing all the time. Although, one element I can think of is the connection from the reader to the author. I feel myself being hooked into a piece just by how relatable it can be but also knowing how much mine and the author's experiences differ. It's relatable but unique to us.

4. What role do you think poetry has on our society today?

I believe poetry has a huge role in our society today. With the digital age it's really easy to be overwhelmed, and I think poetry can help ease that feeling. Also, I feel like as people, we are growing closer in touch with our emotions. Poetry can be used to let out those emotions, or to brighten someone's day. It can be used to express how we feel, and in that, others can connect to it.
